After a series of successful 3D titles, including Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the iconic plumber is returning to his roots. Nintendo recently announced Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a new adventure that takes Mario back to his beloved side-scrolling adventures.
Set to be released on October 20, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a departure from the typical “New” Super Mario Bros. style of games. It introduces all-new power-ups, including the intriguing “Wonder Flower” that has the ability to transform Mario and his friends into elephants. The Wonder Flower is said to bring about unpredictable effects. As per Nintendo’s news release, “pipes could come alive, hordes of enemies may appear, characters might change their looks” with the use of this new power-up.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder features a rich ensemble of characters including Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and Daisy, who will join Mario in what seems like a bold new direction for Super Mario Bros. 2D games. The Nintendo Switch already boasts a wealth of 2D side-scrolling Super Mario games. These include New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe a collection of two Wii-era side-scrollers and Super Mario Maker 2. Through Nintendo Switch Online, players can also enjoy the NES classic Super Mario Bros. and its three sequels, as well as Super Mario World for Super NES.
Nintendo also has other exciting releases lined up, including a remake of the SNES classic Super Mario RPG, a re-release of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, and a game featuring Princess Peach in her first starring role in nearly two decades.
