Chevrolet has officially announced that the next-generation Corvette ZR1 is set to debut this summer, with the model expected to hit showrooms as a 2025 edition. The announcement was accompanied by a teaser video that subtly hinted at the new ZR1’s engine sound, raising anticipation among sports car enthusiasts.
Spotted undergoing testing at the Nürburgring, the prototype of the upcoming ZR1 has fueled speculations with its enhanced design and powerful performance features. Rumored to house a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine—identified in a General Motors parts catalog last fall as the LT7—this powertrain upgrade represents a significant boost from the Z06’s naturally aspirated LT6, which delivers 670 horsepower. With the addition of turbos, the ZR1’s output could soar to an impressive 850 horsepower.
The vehicle is expected to maintain the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission found in all C8-generation Corvettes, channeling all that power to the rear wheels. Aesthetically, the ZR1 prototype showcases a wide-body design akin to the Z06 but includes new aerodynamic enhancements like a front hood vent and a substantial rear wing to increase downforce, alongside novel secondary side intakes on the rear fenders.
The last ZR1 model set a benchmark in performance, clinching the Motor Authority Best Car to Buy 2019 award, largely thanks to its 755 horsepower output. It was celebrated for its dual capability—dominating on the track while remaining comfortably drivable on the street.
Looking beyond the ZR1, Chevrolet appears to be planning an even more formidable conclusion to the C8 platform. The speculated Corvette Zora is expected to honor the legacy of Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, featuring a hybrid powertrain that combines the ZR1’s engine with the front-mounted electric motor from the Corvette E-Ray. This setup could potentially deliver a combined output of approximately 1,000 horsepower, utilizing an all-wheel-drive system.
