Apple’s next major iPhone update is close to landing, and the headline feature is the most significant rework of Siri in years. iOS 27, first shown off at WWDC 2026 on June 8, is currently in public beta and expected to reach all eligible iPhones on Monday, September 14, 2026, based on Apple’s typical release pattern of shipping major iOS versions on a Monday roughly two weeks after its fall hardware event.

Apple has already released public betas of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and tvOS 27 as of August 31, giving developers and beta testers hands-on time with the update before the general public gets it.

A rebuilt Siri, powered in part by Google

The centerpiece of iOS 27 is Siri AI, an overhaul Apple describes as profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable than the assistant it replaces. According to TechCrunch’s WWDC coverage, the new Siri runs with Google Gemini working under the hood, a detail that marks a notable shift for a company that has historically built its AI stack in-house.

The new Siri is designed to hold natural, back-and-forth conversations rather than responding to single, rigid commands. It can also draw on personal context pulled from across a user’s device — old photos, emails, notes, and messages — to answer questions more specifically. Apple says Siri AI will be able to take direct action inside apps like Messages, Music, and Reminders, so a user could ask it to edit a message they just sent or add a song to a playlist using plain language instead of a fixed voice command.

Siri is also getting a standalone app for the first time, in addition to continuing to work across the rest of iOS.

Visual intelligence and a smarter camera

iOS 27 extends Siri’s reach to the Camera app through a new Siri mode. Users will be able to point their camera at something in the real world and ask Siri questions or trigger actions based on what it sees — an expansion of the visual intelligence features Apple began building out in earlier iOS versions.

Voice quality is also getting attention. Apple says Siri AI will feature more natural, expressive voices, and on compatible devices, users will get controls to adjust how fast and expressive Siri sounds. Dictation is being upgraded too, with improved speech recognition and automatic punctuation, capitalization, and formatting.

Apple Intelligence expands beyond Siri

The Siri rebuild is just one piece of a broader Apple Intelligence push across iOS 27. Per Apple’s own announcement, the update brings improved Writing Tools and the ability to generate images using a private cloud-based model. That image generation feature comes with daily usage limits, and Apple is giving paid iCloud+ subscribers higher limits — though notably, subscribers on the entry-level 50GB iCloud+ tier are excluded from that boost, according to Wikipedia’s iOS 27 release notes.

Apple Intelligence improvements also show up in Safari, with better tab management, one-tap password updates, and cross-app context awareness that lets the system carry information between different apps more intelligently, according to TechCrunch’s WWDC recap.

Not every feature is available to every device. Custom Siri voices and some of the most advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities are restricted to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air, while Home app camera features powered by Apple Intelligence require an iCloud+ plan with at least 2TB of storage.

Who can actually install it?

iOS 27 supports iPhones going back to the iPhone 11, according to Apple, putting to rest earlier speculation from a Weibo leak claiming the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation) would be cut from compatibility. That said, having the update installed and having access to Apple Intelligence are two different things — iPhone 15 and older models won’t gain any Apple Intelligence features at all, consistent with Apple’s existing hardware requirements for AI features.

Apple has also confirmed Siri AI will launch with a waitlist when iOS 27 goes live, meaning not every eligible user will get instant access to the new assistant the moment they update.

Why this rollout Important?

Apple’s Siri overhaul has been years in the making, and it arrives at a moment when the company has faced real pressure over how far behind it looked in the broader AI assistant race. Framing the new Siri as one part of a longer list of software refinements, rather than the headline act on its own, suggests Apple is trying to rebuild user trust gradually rather than promise a single dramatic leap. Whether Siri AI closes the gap with rivals like Google Assistant’s successor and other generative AI assistants will depend heavily on how it performs once it’s in millions of hands rather than a WWDC keynote demo.
